Bhutan joins the rest of the World to Observe World AIDS Day today.

-->
I finished my exam and came to the room. I heard a beep in my mobile and I knew it  was a message. I looked at my mobile, the message read “World AIDS Day! About to 2.7 Million people were infected in 2008 alone. Know your Status. Get Tested!!!”. Then I knew that today
is the World AIDS Day.
After having a lunch I went to Thimphu, town, I saw similar messages written on banners. I then came back in the City Bus. There too, just at the front seat, a man was carrying a huge cartoon box. I was just wondering, what must be inside the box? After a while, I found out that that man works for UNDP and went to observe the day. He was carrying boxes of condoms and other health pamphlets on the HIV/AIDs.
I came back and browsed through the internet. I found that there are total of 185 cases of HIV AIDS of which 25 are new cases detected in 2009. According to a Kuensel report, of the 25 new cases, 21 were infected through sexual contact, and three by mother child transmission.

According to World Health Organization, on the eve of World AIDS Day, WHO is releasing new recommendations on treatment, prevention and infant feeding in the context of HIV, based on the latest scientific evidence. The report states that WHO now recommends earlier initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for adults and adolescents, the delivery of more patient-friendly antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), and prolonged use of ARVs to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. For the first time, WHO recommends that HIV-positive mothers or their infants take ARVs while breastfeeding to prevent HIV transmission.
A BBC reports that in order to highlight the current state of HIV and AIDS globally, as well as the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the Global Fund’s Ambassador for the protection of mothers and children against AIDS, and Professor Michel Kazatchkine, the Global Fund’s Executive Director, made a number of joint media appearances for World AIDS Day..
A live Program by BBS this evening revealed that in Bhutan, today, the World AIDS Day is celebrated in Zhemgang.  The Director of Public Health Department, Ministry of Health Dr. Ugyen Dophu in an interview with BBS said that Her Majesty the Queen Mother Azhi Sangay Choden Wangchuk. Over a thousand people took part in the celebration. He said that there are about seven cases in Zhemgang.

The first case of HIV/AIDS in Bhutan was detected in 1993.
